Wedoany.com News, Recently, the House of Assembly of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, passed a significant resolution urging the state government to collaborate with the private sector to establish waste recycling plants across the state. The aim is to achieve "turning waste into treasure," protect the environment, and create employment.

The resolution was introduced by Ukpong Akpabio, the representative of the Essien Udim State Constituency, during a plenary session of the assembly. He pointed out that the volume of commercial and household waste generated daily in the state has surged, and improper disposal has exacerbated flooding and environmental degradation. He emphasized that recycling offers significant advantages over landfilling and that waste recycling has become a major economic opportunity, citing media data indicating Nigeria's recycling industry is worth over $2 billion. Akpabio further explained that establishing local recycling plants could tap into economic potential, reduce environmental and health risks, stimulate economic growth, and create jobs, aligning with the spirit of promoting public-private partnerships in Governor Umo Eno's "Rise" agenda. The motion received support and secondment from several assembly members. Speaker Udeme Otong, while ruling, described it as a people-oriented initiative benefiting the entire state.
