A new junction will be added to the M5 motorway in South West England to connect to an upcoming electric vehicle battery gigaplant. The project, located in the Somerset area, is expected to create local jobs.

This five-year project is being undertaken by contractor Costain and authorized through a Regional Delivery Partnership framework. The total contract value is approximately £100 million, covering design, construction, and subsequent handover. The new junction, designated 22A, is situated between Burnham-on-Sea and Bridgwater. Once completed, it will provide access to the Gravity Smart Campus and the Agratas-funded gigaplant.
The Agratas gigaplant involves a £4 billion investment and, upon completion, will be the UK's largest electric vehicle battery production facility. The new M5 junction will include northbound slip roads, helping to alleviate traffic pressure on the section south of the River Huntspill. Costain is providing infrastructure services for the project, including engineering design, project delivery, and supply chain management, with WSP acting as the design partner. After project completion, the junction will be handed over to National Highways for management.
