Australia's A$700 Million Kwinana Freeway Upgrade Set to Begin in Early 2027

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 28, the Australian Federal Government and the Western Australian State Government jointly announced that the construction contract for the Kwinana Freeway Upgrade project has been officially awarded to a consortium comprising CPB Contractors, McConnell Dowell Constructors, Arup Australia Projects, and Jacobs Group. The project has a total investment of A$700 million, jointly funded by the Albanese Federal Government and the Cook State Labor Government.
The upgrade section is located south of Perth, spanning over 29 kilometers between Roe Highway and Safety Bay Road. The scope of works includes adding new lanes, upgrading interchanges, installing intelligent transport systems, and constructing or modifying noise walls along the corridor. The project is expected to create approximately 4,000 jobs during the construction phase.
CPB Contractors is the Australian subsidiary of Cimic (ACS Group). The consortium was announced as the preferred bidder in July 2026, followed by contract negotiations with Main Roads WA, the state's road management authority. Earlier, in March 2026, the project entered the detailed proposal solicitation stage, with shortlisted contractors and consultants invited to submit their proposals.
Construction is scheduled to commence in early 2027, subject to the completion of environmental and heritage approvals. The project is expected to take approximately two years to complete. The Federal Government's funding commitment for the project is A$350 million.
Kwinana Freeway is one of Perth's busiest transport corridors. The project aims to alleviate peak-hour traffic congestion in Perth's southern suburbs and enhance road safety levels.
