Preliminary works begin on Stage 1 of Cairns Western Arterial Road duplication

Located between Lake Placid Road and Captain Cook Highway, the current scope of work involves relocating water and sewerage infrastructure along the section between Barron River and Caravonica State School. Excavation, drilling, and minor earthworks required for utility relocation are currently underway; these utilities must be moved out of the future road construction corridor before duplication works can proceed. In terms of project phases, the current milestone is corridor preparation, rather than delivery of the four-lane carriageway itself.

Under the project plan, the completed duplication will deliver two lanes in each direction, with intersection upgrades carried out simultaneously. The duplication will reduce reliance on single lanes in both directions, providing greater capacity for general and commercial traffic. The Cairns Western Arterial Road is a key corridor running through northern Cairns and connecting to Captain Cook Highway. The project is linked to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games delivery plan, though its everyday transport value extends well beyond the Games.

The Australian Federal Government and the Queensland Government have stated that Cairns' continued growth places greater demands on the road network, and the additional capacity will be used to improve traffic flow, safety, and reliability. Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King said the four-lane upgrade would improve safety, capacity, and traffic flow. Federal Member for Leichhardt Matt Smith said the project would bring the relevant section closer to full duplication, making travel safer and smoother while boosting productivity for local businesses. Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said Cairns' growth was placing greater pressure on the existing road network, and the duplicated network would be safer and reduce congestion. To date, the government has not announced the main construction contract, nor has it provided a completion date for the duplication works.
