en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 25, Infrasense announced the completion of a 3D ground-penetrating radar survey covering approximately 1.37 miles of State Route 133 in Lowell, Massachusetts, USA. The survey covered the eastbound and westbound travel lanes, shoulders on both sides, and the center turning lane, primarily to assess the structural condition of the concrete pavement, the layout of dowel bars and tie bars, and to identify potential voids beneath the pavement.

The project used the Kontur DXG1820 3D ground-penetrating radar system for data acquisition. The equipment is configured with 20 independent channels and can continuously acquire subsurface 3D information across a width of approximately 5 feet. Compared with single-channel ground-penetrating radar, this system can simultaneously record transverse and longitudinal structural features to build a more complete subsurface pavement dataset.

The survey focused on four key aspects: identifying whether dowel bars and tie bars are missing, embedded too shallow, or misaligned; determining the standard spacing and embedment depth of dowel bars at transverse joints; analyzing the depth of the bottom of pavement structural layers; and detecting anomalous reflections beneath the pavement that may correspond to subsurface voids. The above analyses covered the entire survey section.

Based on the acquired results, Infrasense has generated subsurface structural data deliverables for relevant departments to use in pavement performance evaluation, maintenance planning, and subsequent repair design. Currently available public information has not yet disclosed the specific number of voids, the proportion of dowel bar anomalies, or the scale of repair work directly triggered by this survey.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation had previously included the 0 to 1.37-mile section of State Route 133 in Lowell in the municipal pavement program, and the coverage length in the official project list is consistent with the section covered by this 3D-GPR survey. This section therefore has a relatively clear application scenario for subsequent maintenance and pavement engineering.
