Wedoany.com Report on Feb 2nd, The Swiss-Swedish engineering group ABB has recently signed a contract to provide advanced motor control solutions for the Cape Station geothermal development project in southwestern Utah, USA. The project, being built by Fervo Energy, is expected to deliver 500 megawatts of carbon-free baseload power to the grid upon full operation, making it one of the world's largest next-generation geothermal energy projects by installed capacity.
The Cape Station project employs horizontal drilling technology adapted from mature processes in the oil and gas industry, enabling access to previously hard-to-develop geothermal resources. The project is scheduled to begin supplying power by the end of 2026, with an initial 100 MW capacity coming online in early 2027, followed by the remaining 400 MW in subsequent phases. Breakthrough Energy, backed by Bill Gates, is a major investor and continues to support the project's advancement in Utah.
Under the agreement, ABB will deliver over 80 medium-voltage drives to the site for managing the project's pumping equipment. The supporting package also includes medium-voltage motors, generators, low-voltage motor control centers, and medium-voltage switchgear, along with prefabricated eHouses to house the well-site drive systems and related electrical facilities. Tim Latimer, CEO of Fervo Energy, stated: "ABB is globally recognized for providing reliable, high-performance electrification and motor control solutions for critical energy projects. Their proven track record and ability to consult, develop, and execute at scale made ABB the clear choice again for the Cape Station project."
Fervo Energy's geothermal development approach differs from traditional projects by drilling horizontal wells within geothermal reservoirs, allowing multiple wells to be drilled from a single well pad. This technology reduces surface land use, lowers drilling risks, and unlocks geothermal resources previously considered economically unviable. This technique has attracted attention from utilities and energy companies seeking stable, dispatchable renewable energy to complement intermittent solar and wind power.
Brandon Spencer, President of ABB's Motion business area, noted: "Our strategic partnership with innovative clean energy producers like Fervo Energy reinforces our commitment to expanding the potential of reliable renewable energy using existing, proven electrification technologies. We are excited about Fervo Energy's work, particularly the Cape Station project's potential to contribute to a sustainable energy future." This collaboration builds upon the existing business relationship between the parties, further solidifying ABB's position in the renewable energy sector.
The advancement of the Cape Station project comes at a time when utilities and grid operators are seeking to add stable capacity to meet growing electricity demand driven by data centers, manufacturing reshoring, and the electrification of transportation and heating. Geothermal energy offers unique advantages: unlike oil or gas, it does not have to contend with fuel supply risks or trade volatility; unlike other renewables, it can provide stable, non-intermittent energy supply. It is estimated that the project's 500 MW capacity could power approximately 355,000 households annually. Its location in southwestern Utah positions it to serve load centers with rapidly growing electricity demand in the western United States.
The development timeline for the Cape Station project indicates that first commercial operations could begin in the near term, with full-scale construction proceeding over the next year. The successful implementation of this project could spur the deployment of Enhanced Geothermal Systems in other parts of the US and internationally, particularly in areas with suitable geology but limited conventional hydrothermal resources.
