Wedoany.com Report on Feb 3rd, the Madrid City Council initiated renovation work on the municipal parking lot beneath Plaza de Colón. This project, with an investment of 6.7 million euros, aims to transform the existing space into a comprehensive urban logistics and sustainable mobility hub.

The renovation involves an area of over 5,000 square meters, including the conversion of the former crane base of the Madrid Municipal Transport Company (EMT) into modern logistics facilities. This project is part of the updated "Madrid 360 Urban Goods Distribution Strategy" approved in 2022 and is being promoted jointly by the City Council and EMT Madrid.
The planned urban logistics hub will occupy 4,000 square meters, equipped with charging facilities, loading/unloading areas, a cross-docking system, last-mile delivery services, and smart lockers. Simultaneously, a 1,300-square-meter sustainable mobility zone will be established, featuring high-power charging points, car-sharing stations, BiciMAD public bicycles, bicycle parking, and battery-swapping stations.
The tender for this project will be launched within the year. The construction of the urban logistics hub aims to optimize goods transportation processes in central Madrid by reducing the number of vehicles and shifting operations to off-peak nighttime hours, thereby alleviating traffic congestion and improving air quality.
The facility will also support commercial parcel delivery, the electrification of transport fleets, and the promotion of eco-friendly delivery models. This renovation represents the latest implementation of Madrid's plan to transform traditional parking facilities into multi-functional mobility hubs, with similar facilities already operational at several locations within the city.
