Wedoany.com Report on Feb 6th, Recently, the international standard project ISO 17551 "Leather — Pickled sheep and goat skins — Guide to grading based on defects and size," led and revised by China, has been successfully approved for development. This marks another significant breakthrough for China in the international standardization efforts within the leather sector.

Since its formal submission for project initiation in March 2025, the China Leather and Footwear Research Institute (CLFRI), serving as the domestic technical counterpart for ISO/TC 120 and IULTCS, has actively promoted multiple rounds of communication and coordination with the ISO/TC 120/SC1 Secretariat and ISO Central Secretariat. The project was directly advanced to the DIS (Draft International Standard) stage in January 2026 and is scheduled to solicit comments from relevant stakeholders in the near future. This standard systematically specifies the classification of common defects in pickled sheep and goat skins, their determination methods, and unified procedures for size measurement. It aims to provide a scientific and technical basis for quality assessment and fair trade of such raw materials in international commerce.

This standard is the second major international standard project successfully initiated by China following the first leather product international standard project ISO 18270, which was also led by China. This approval demonstrates China's professional capabilities in the field of leather raw material quality evaluation and grading. It facilitates the integration of China's practical achievements and experience into the internationally recognized technical rule system, further consolidating and enhancing China's voice and influence in the international leather standardization process.

In the future, the China Leather and Footwear Research Institute will continue to deeply participate in international standardization work in the leather field, actively contribute Chinese experience and technical wisdom, and promote the high-quality development of the global leather industry.
