The Indonesian Geothermal Production Area Association (ADPPI) recently issued an urgent call to the government, urging the prompt issuance of regulations for the direct use of geothermal energy, with a particular focus on the tourism sector. The association pointed out that this move would promote growth in related industries while ensuring compliance with sustainable management and utilization standards.

ADPPI Chairman Hasanuddin stated: "Now is a crucial time for the government to finalize regulations on the direct use of geothermal energy. This will allow the potential of geothermal tourism to be optimized and developed sustainably, bringing tangible benefits to local communities." According to Article 15 of the 2014 Geothermal Law, the direct use of geothermal energy must be regulated by government regulations. However, to date, the Indonesian government has only issued Government Regulation No. 7 of 2017, which primarily concerns geothermal power generation.

ADPPI believes that the regulatory gap for the direct use of geothermal energy, especially in the tourism sector, has led to a lack of clear standards and legal protection for geothermal applications in various regions of Indonesia. Hasanuddin emphasized that establishing regulations would help create uniform standards, ensuring geothermal resources are used sustainably and in an environmentally friendly manner, while protecting communities in project areas and providing a framework for community economic benefits. Furthermore, a legislative framework could help secure government support, incentives, and investment opportunities for geothermal tourism and other economic sectors.

During the regulation drafting process, ADPPI recommends the government broadly involve various stakeholders, including provincial, city, and district governments, the business community, and academic institutions, to ensure the regulations are relevant to local realities and effectively drive economic growth. Geothermal tourism has been proven to be a significant driver of economic growth in several regions of Indonesia. Clear regulatory support will accelerate industry development, enhance economic benefits, and ensure geothermal resources are used responsibly and sustainably.
