Wedoany.com Report on Mar 11th, Internet exchange operator DE-CIX has recently completed the acquisition of a majority stake in the Bulgarian Internet Exchange BIX.BG. This move aims to enhance its network interconnection service capabilities in the Balkan region.

Founded in 2009, BIX.BG is Bulgaria's largest carrier-neutral Internet Exchange Point (IXP), connecting over 130 networks. The IXP has 10 Points of Presence (PoPs) in the Sofia metropolitan area, capable of handling over 11 terabits of customer connection capacity, with peak exchange traffic exceeding 1.3 terabits per second.
Under the strategic agreement, BIX.BG will continue to provide its existing services while gaining access to DE-CIX's full suite of services. Dimo Nikolov, CEO of BIX.BG, stated: "By joining the DE-CIX ecosystem, we will expand the networking opportunities for networks connecting to BIX.BG, supporting the evolving connectivity needs of the Bulgarian market. Together, we will strengthen Sofia's role as a regional connectivity hub and continue to provide the reliable, neutral interconnection services our members expect."
This acquisition strengthens DE-CIX's network interconnection footprint in the Balkans, complementing its existing sites in Istanbul and Athens. Ivo Ivanov, CEO of DE-CIX, added: "This partnership supports the integration of BIX.BG into the DE-CIX ecosystem, broadens the horizons for Bulgarian network operators, and solidifies DE-CIX's presence in another European country. This arrangement will combine the excellence of local peering in Sofia with the global reach of a worldwide leader."
DE-CIX's expansion in the Balkans is part of its global strategy. The operator recently entered the Brazilian market via São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and plans to extend its interconnection services to Low Earth Orbit through the Space-IX project.
