Wedoany.com Report on Mar 16th, DB Cargo UK, in collaboration with Rail Operations Group and Network Rail, conducted a test on the Stadler Class 93 tri-mode locomotive on March 10. Locomotive 93006 hauled a 1500-tonne intermodal train between Liverpool Port and Mossend Terminal in Scotland to evaluate its performance on the West Coast Main Line freight corridor.

The Stadler Class 93 tri-mode locomotive, developed based on the Class 68 and Class 88 platforms, is designed for both freight and passenger services. Its primary power source is the 25 kV AC system, delivering 4 MW of power, supplemented by 0.6 MW from battery packs. For non-electrified lines, the locomotive is equipped with a 900 kW Stage V standard diesel engine and two lithium-titanate oxide battery packs, supporting 400 kW of assistance in hybrid mode or zero-emission shunting operations.

This test is part of DB Cargo UK's assessment of multi-mode traction technology, aiming to address the challenges posed by the incomplete electrification of the UK rail network. The Class 93 tri-mode locomotive combines electric, diesel, and battery power sources, offering operational flexibility to seamlessly switch between electrified and non-electrified lines, thereby reducing carbon emissions and improving asset utilization.

During the test, the locomotive successfully hauled a 1500-tonne payload and demonstrated its ability to start from a standstill on steep gradients. DB Cargo UK stated that the test is part of its review of future fleet investment strategy but has not yet confirmed whether it will purchase the Class 93 locomotives. The company expressed satisfaction with the locomotive's performance and plans to conduct further tests.
