She pointed out that Southeast Asia is a region comprising multiple countries, which are already significant customers for the US, while their populations and income levels continue to rise.

Vetter previously served at the Office of the United States Trade Representative from 2014 to 2017. She emphasized: "This is a region with multiple countries, they are already good customers for us, and both population and income are growing." She believes that the demand in the Southeast Asian market is becoming more diverse, providing new opportunities for US agriculture.

"We can export raw materials to them now," Vetter said, "but their demand for more diverse, high-value agricultural products continues to grow." She added that the US is not the only country seeking opportunities in Southeast Asia; the region is also continuously concluding trade agreements and broadly trading with US competitors.

Vetter noted that these competitors not only supply bulk commodities but also provide high-value products, so the US needs to actively invest in these trade relationships to reap rewards in the long term. Her comments were made during the Winthrop Rockefeller Distinguished Lecture Series at the University of Arkansas on Tuesday, highlighting the importance of Southeast Asian trade for the future of US agriculture.
