en.Wedoany.com Report on Mar 27th, German energy company E.ON has announced the installation of one million smart meters nationwide, becoming the first company in the country to reach this milestone. The one-millionth smart metering system was installed by E.ON's regional subsidiary LEW Verteilnetz at a customer site near Augsburg.
E.ON expects the average rollout rate for smart meters to reach approximately 30% by the end of 2025, positioning it as a leader in Germany's mandatory installation program. Although the company is responsible for only a quarter of the metering points, nearly half of Germany's smart meters have been deployed within its grid areas. In the future, E.ON plans to install an additional approximately 500,000 smart metering systems annually.
Thomas König, E.ON Board Member responsible for energy networks, emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating: "The company continues to deliver results even under complex regulatory and technical conditions." He added: "One million smart meters send a clear signal for the future. E.ON will focus on rollout areas where smart meters can bring the greatest value, such as heat pumps, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, battery storage, photovoltaic systems, and other flexible energy consumers." However, he also noted that Germany's nationwide rollout process needs to be simplified and accelerated to benefit both the grid and customers.
Smart meters play a key role in the energy transition. These devices provide grid operators with real-time data on the status of the distribution network, contributing to more efficient control, higher reliability, and more stable energy supply. For customers, smart meters offer opportunities to actively participate in the energy transition through tools like flexible tariffs and better energy consumption monitoring. Germany still lags behind other European countries in smart meter deployment, with only 3.8% of metering points equipped with smart systems, far below the European average of over 60%. In contrast, countries like Sweden have already completed near-nationwide installation of second-generation smart meters.
A successful and accelerated rollout of smart meters in Germany is crucial for unlocking the benefits for grid stability, customer engagement, and the overall energy transition. E.ON stated that it will continue to advance the rollout in the coming years, supporting the transformation of the energy system.
