en.Wedoany.com Reported - According to Yonhap News, the Ministry of Science and ICT of South Korea and Google's subsidiary artificial intelligence company DeepMind officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul on April 27. South Korean Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT, Yoo Sang-im, along with DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, attended the signing ceremony. Both sides agreed to collaborate in three major areas: joint AI research in science and technology, AI talent development, and responsible use of AI, while exploring substantive cooperation plans across various fields such as technology, infrastructure, and researcher exchanges to ensure the smooth implementation of the "K-Moonshot" technology innovation project promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
In terms of specific cooperation areas, both sides will deepen collaboration in multiple directions, including life sciences, meteorology, climate, and AI scientists. They plan to actively conduct joint research and researcher exchanges centered around the Korea Science AI Research Center, scheduled to launch in May. The cooperation also includes the joint development and verification of AI models and tools, shared use of scientific data, and collaboration on an AI-driven bio-innovation research hub.
At the signing ceremony, Yoo Sang-im stated that this MOU will serve as an opportunity to accelerate technological and AI innovation centered on K-Moonshot in South Korea, while promoting research into safe and responsible AI and best practices. K-Moonshot is a national-level technology innovation project led by the South Korean government, aimed at solving major national challenges through public-private partnerships and the use of AI technology. Its goals are to double research efficiency by 2030 and complete 12 national tasks by 2035, including advanced biotechnology, future energy, physical AI, semiconductors, and quantum technology.
During his visit to South Korea, Hassabis expressed DeepMind's desire to deepen cooperation with Korean companies, including Samsung, SK Hynix, Hyundai's Boston Dynamics, and LG, and to promote new joint projects with them. He described South Korea as "a global leader in all key areas, from chips to robotics." To implement the cooperation, Google will set up the world's first AI campus covering approximately 1,980 square meters in the Gangnam district of Seoul. This campus will serve as a base for DeepMind and South Korea to collaborate on AI science and technology related to K-Moonshot, while strengthening cooperation with South Korean academia, research institutions, and startups. The campus will also provide internship opportunities for South Korean AI talent to expand their global research experience.
