en.Wedoany.com Reported - UK fuel distributor Certas Energy has announced an investment of £1.5 million (€1.76 million) to upgrade its national hydrotreated vegetable oil infrastructure, planning to refurbish five heavy goods vehicle refueling points over the next 12 months. This initiative positions the company as one of the frontrunners in the UK's transition to low-carbon liquid fuels.
The project has already completed the upgrade of the Alconbury refueling point in Cambridgeshire, which involved an investment of £500,000 (€586,000) and was finished in May. This site is the first to undergo a comprehensive upgrade of pumps, pipelines, safety systems, and digital card reader technology, while also significantly expanding alternative fuel supply capacity.
The Alconbury site is now the 17th Certas Energy refueling point to offer hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). This milestone reflects the rapidly growing demand for ready-to-use renewable diesel in the UK's transport and logistics sector. The company's network of 30 sites is being steadily retrofitted to support operators seeking immediate, scalable carbon reduction solutions without replacing their existing fleets.
The upgraded site reopened to drivers on May 14, equipped with eight high-speed fuel nozzles capable of dispensing up to 120 liters of fuel per minute, thereby reducing waiting times and improving fleet operational efficiency. The site offers diesel, AdBlue, and is compatible with all major digital fuel cards, including FuelTapp, ensuring operators retain full flexibility while gaining access to low-carbon fuel options.
The renovation also includes an investment of £80,000 (€94,000) in partnership with UK Truck Clean to build a modern drive-through truck washing facility.
Mike Heaton, Head of Asset Development at Certas Energy, stated: "Investing in existing refueling point infrastructure is just as important as expanding and building new sites. We want to ensure every operational site is future-ready, including the capability to supply new fuel types, while maintaining a smooth, efficient refueling process and a comfortable experience for HGV drivers on UK roads."
Mike Heaton added that modern equipment, enhanced safety, and maximized uptime are central to preparing the network for the UK's fuel transition period. Further upgrades to the Alconbury site, including refurbishing the store and a full rebranding of the Certas Energy image, are planned for August 2026.
In addition to the refueling point project, Certas Energy is expanding its truck stop network, with plans to add two new sites in 2026. Each site will replicate the award-winning facilities and enhanced safety standards of The Stop at The Hollies site, with more sites expected to follow as the company builds a national network to accommodate the alternative fuel transition.
