en.Wedoany.com Reported - The renovation of the Gubrist Tunnel on Zurich's northern bypass in Switzerland is currently ahead of the original schedule. The GUBRI consortium, consisting of Implenia, Walo Bertschinger, and Anliker, has completed the construction of the first tube 44 days ahead of schedule, and the tunnel work on the second tube is also progressing ahead of plan.

Gubrist Tunnel Renovation Progress

This tunnel project is part of Lot 3 of the Swiss Federal Roads Office project. The scope of work includes the renovation of both tubes, involving the demolition of existing carriageway slabs and shoulders and the construction of new structures, the building of new cable ducts, and concrete repair on approximately 127,000 square meters of tunnel walls.

Implenia attributes the ahead-of-schedule progress to the application of lean construction methods. Sadat Latag, Implenia's Project Manager for Civil Engineering in Zurich, stated: "The lean method has been with us from the very beginning on this project. We invested a lot of time in construction preparation, documented all the experience gained from renovating the first tube, and planned and scheduled all work steps with all participants right from the start. This involved a great deal of communication, discussion, coordination, and training. Ultimately, everyone was clear on what we are building here, in what sequence, and how they would contribute."

Thomas Geiger, Tunnel Project Manager and Site Manager, pointed out that this approach helps to address the challenges of a tight schedule and a large number of personnel working in a confined space. Up to 170 employees work on site in two shifts, sharing only a few tunnel entrances.

The tunnel renovation is expected to be completed next year.
