en.Wedoany.com Reported - JGC Holdings has officially started green ammonia production at its green ammonia plant utilizing KBR's K-GreeN® technology. The project, funded by Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), was successfully commissioned in early 2026. This plant represents a significant milestone in Japan's push for hydrogen and ammonia energy deployment, with JGC responsible for engineering, construction, and operations, and KBR providing the green ammonia technology license and proprietary equipment.

Hari Ravindran, Senior Vice President and Global Head of KBR's Technology Solutions, stated: "The successful startup of one of the world's first green ammonia plants demonstrates what can be achieved when industry leaders collaborate around innovation. By combining KBR's proven ammonia synthesis technology with advanced electrolyzers, nitrogen generation systems, and smart energy storage, we are proving that reliable, renewable-based ammonia production is not just the future—it is a reality today."

The project began with the technology contract award phase in 2022, followed by a two-year engineering and construction phase led by JGC, with commissioning and initial production completed this year. At the plant, hydrogen is produced using alkaline electrolyzers supplied by Asahi Kasei, with the required electricity sourced from a nearby photovoltaic power station and partially from the grid; liquid nitrogen is transported to the site via tanker trucks. At full capacity, the facility can produce 4 tons of green ammonia per day, which will be used for the DeNOx process in power plants in the future.

The plant also showcases an integrated control system jointly developed by JGC and Asahi Kasei for managing hydrogen production, combined with KBR's K-GreeN® advanced process control system and proprietary equipment. This design enables JGC to operate the unit in a fully dynamic mode, responding quickly and smoothly to fluctuations caused by variations in photovoltaic power supply. KBR has long been at the forefront of innovation in the ammonia industry, having licensed, designed, or constructed over 260 new ammonia production plants worldwide since 1943.
