en.Wedoany.com Reported - Northern Ireland Water (NI Water) recently announced the completion of an upgrade to the Aghanloo Wastewater Treatment Plant, located on the outskirts of Limavady. The project, with a total investment of £4 million, adopts a nature-based sustainable wastewater treatment solution.

The core of the upgrade is the introduction of the innovative Phragmafiltre® treatment process. This technology achieves natural water purification through a series of reed beds, with extremely low overall energy consumption.

Michael Donnelly, Senior Project Manager at Northern Ireland Water (NI Water), explained that this process has been tested and proven across multiple locations in Europe and is suitable for rural areas with sufficient land for constructing reed beds. By reducing the use of mechanical components, the new treatment plant not only meets environmental standards for wastewater treatment but also lowers maintenance requirements and operational costs.

He noted that this low-carbon, low-energy facility seamlessly integrates into the landscape and is planned to sustainably serve the local community for the next 20 years. The reed beds provide a habitat for birds, insects, and other wildlife, while also offering natural rainwater protection, helping to protect and improve surrounding waterways.

The project involved planting over 10,000 reeds, covering an area of 3,000 square meters, with a total of six reed beds spanning an area equivalent to 16 tennis courts.

The new facility was constructed by the DLJ Water joint venture, comprising Lowry Building & Civil Engineering (Castlederg) and Avove Ireland (Newry), with TetraTech of Belfast providing project management and technical support.

A similar nature-based wastewater treatment system was completed in Ballykelly in 2022.
