Ethiopia's Modjo Dry Port Expansion Project Contracted by CCECC Completed

en.Wedoany.com Reported - The expansion project of Ethiopia's Modjo Dry Port, contracted by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), was completed on September 10 in Modjo, and will significantly improve Ethiopia's cargo transport efficiency and reduce logistics costs.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy stated at the completion ceremony that in recent years Ethiopia has achieved rapid economic and social development, with the logistics industry making important contributions. However, for a landlocked country like Ethiopia, logistics costs remain too high, resulting in persistently high prices for imported goods. The expansion of Modjo Dry Port will significantly boost cargo throughput and transport efficiency.

Sun Mingxi, Chargé d'Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Ethiopia, said that the project is an important supporting facility of the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway, which handles a large volume of Ethiopia's international cargo trade transport. China and Ethiopia are advancing the construction of the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway Prosperity Belt. The expansion and modernization of the dry port will greatly enhance Ethiopia's inland logistics transport efficiency and further drive economic development along the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway and around Modjo.

CCECC introduced that the project is an expansion and upgrade of the existing Modjo Dry Port of the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway, covering an area of approximately 67.8 hectares. Upon completion, it will serve as the core hub of the Ethiopia-Djibouti trade corridor, increasing annual cargo throughput from 520,000 TEUs to 1.6 million TEUs, and significantly reducing the average cargo dwell time at the port from a maximum of 60 days to 8 days.

Modjo Dry Port is located in Modjo, Oromia Region, in south-central Ethiopia, about 70 kilometers from the capital Addis Ababa. As the largest inland port in Ethiopia, Modjo Dry Port handles the storage and transport of most of the country's imported goods. The expansion of Modjo Dry Port cost approximately 110 million US dollars, entirely financed by a loan from the World Bank.
