en.Wedoany.com Reported - On November 5, the Western Ligurian Sea Port System Authority of Italy presented a new port master plan for the ports of Savona and Vado, which aims to add approximately 500,000 square meters of port area through land reclamation. Of this total, the historic port area of Savona is planned to gain nearly 300,000 square meters through reclamation, while the Port of Vado is planned to gain more than 200,000 square meters. The proposals are currently still in the stage of planning assessment and stakeholder consultation.

The planning for the Port of Savona focuses on expanding the historic port area, with nearly 300,000 square meters of land reclamation intended to bring the relevant port area to nearly twice its current size. The new space will be used to reorganize port operating areas and functional layout, in coordination with the reconfiguration of existing wharves and port facilities. The port authority is studying specific arrangements for new quay lines and operating space to meet the needs of future port business development.

The reclamation plan for the Port of Vado covers more than 200,000 square meters, mainly involving the extension of the existing APM Terminals container terminal, the expansion of the ro-ro passenger transport area, and the adjustment of offshore port facilities. The related works will also be coordinated with the reconfiguration of the port railway marshalling yard, so that the new operating space connects with wharves, storage yards, and railway facilities.

The plan for the Port of Vado also involves the extension of a multifunctional port platform, proposed to be extended outward by approximately 150 meters, with an option to further extend it to 200 meters. For the passenger and commercial areas, consideration is being given to adding berths capable of accommodating vessels 250 to 300 meters in length, expanding vehicle waiting areas and port operating space.

Landside collection and distribution facilities are also part of the Savona–Vado port master plan. The Port of Savona plans to connect directly to the highway network through an underground passage in the port area and to upgrade railway facilities so that freight trains can reach a length of 750 meters. The proposals incorporate port reclamation, wharf layout, and road and rail connection facilities into a single planning framework.

The Western Ligurian Sea Port System Authority has previously conducted multiple rounds of consultations with terminal operators, port users, local institutions, and industry organizations to gather opinions on port space allocation and infrastructure proposals. Under the current schedule, the plan is expected to be submitted to the port management committee for preliminary adoption between December 2026 and January 2027, after which it will enter the strategic environmental assessment and relevant institutional review procedures.
