Wedoany.com Report-Feb 25, A new hydrogen refuelling station, Element 2, is under construction near the former St George Hotel at Teesside Airport. The facility will cater to a variety of hydrogen-powered road vehicles, such as trucks, vans, and cars, as well as airport-specific vehicles. It will provide refuelling options at both 700 and 350 bar pressures. Construction is slated for completion this spring, with operations to follow after installation and commissioning are finalized.
The station forms part of the Tees Valley Hydrogen Transport Hub, a project supported by the UK Government to develop public hydrogen refuelling infrastructure across the region. Element 2, a prominent hydrogen refuelling company in the UK, is overseeing the initiative and supplying the infrastructure needed to promote hydrogen as a viable transport fuel. Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen stated: "We were first out of the blocks when it came to backing hydrogen – and it’s great to see the groundwork is now paying off with action and results. We want to continue to stretch our lead at the forefront of the cleaner, healthier and safer industries of tomorrow and having this station at our airport is a huge marker laid down to the rest of the country."
Teesside Airport has been involved with hydrogen fuel since 2021, when it introduced a temporary Element 2 refuelling station and acquired low-emission hydrogen vehicles, including cars, trucks, forklifts, vans, and tugs. The area is also emerging as a center for sustainable aviation fuel activities, with the airport recently entering a fully renewable energy agreement facilitated by 121 Business Links. Phil Forster, the airport’s managing director, commented: "We’re flying more people to more destinations, but we’re also adding more strings to our bow at Teesside Airport, with our cargo facility, the business park, new hangars and our green energy ambitions. Securing planning permission for this new Element 2 hydrogen refuelling station is another key milestone. We’re pioneering new technology at the airport and now we’re pioneering clean energy fuels which will all help to boost our airport."
Since its launch in 2020, Element 2 has conducted over 1,500 refuelling operations for various high-profile clients and vehicle types. CEO James Harris remarked: "Element 2 is providing the UK backbone for hydrogen supply and retail infrastructure for industrials, Power to Liquid, off-grid and transport demand, and this pioneering site at Teesside helps to drive and further strengthen the UK-wide infrastructure that is much needed for commercial access to hydrogen. We are excited to work with Teesside International Airport, Innovate UK and local commercial fleets to achieve this and help reduce transport emissions in the Tees Valley." The project is anticipated to generate numerous job opportunities at the airport in the years ahead.
