en.Wedoany.com Reported - Network Rail has issued a pre-qualification notice for the tunnel and slab track package within the Transpennine Route Upgrade, to accommodate larger freight trains.

The W2BC project, located between Stalybridge and Huddersfield, includes W12 gauge clearance modifications for three tunnels. Among them, Stalybridge Tunnel and Scout Tunnels require significant lowering and installation of slab track to achieve W12 gauge clearance. The tender notice states that this is a specialized task due to the need for temporary works to ensure tunnel stability throughout the scheme, as well as logistical constraints posed by the tunnel locations.

The scope of works also includes line speed increases, major upgrades to four stations, extensive track renewals, signaling works, and full electrification, with additional capacity provided by a new third line from Standedge to Gledholt. The contract is expected to run from April 30, 2027, to April 27, 2035. The submission deadline is July 10, 2026, and at least four suppliers will be invited to bid.

The W2BC project is part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade, a series of transformation schemes across the North of England aimed at boosting economic growth. In 2024, Cowi was awarded the design contract for the project.
