en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) is accelerating its sustainability goals through a comprehensive energy-saving project that includes the region's largest solar power installation, aiming to reduce energy consumption by 50% from the 2018 baseline by 2030.

The district has partnered with decarbonization and energy services provider Veregy, signing a district-wide guaranteed energy savings performance contract. Under this model, Veregy commits that energy savings will cover the cost of upgrades, eliminating the need for bond funding. The scope of upgrades approved by the school board includes efficient LED indoor, outdoor, and sports lighting upgrades, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system upgrades, and a 1.4 MW on-site solar power system. LTUSD's solar construction is scheduled to begin next spring. This initiative follows the successful solar project implemented by the South Tahoe Public Utility District, further solidifying the viability of renewable energy production in the region.

At South Tahoe High School, Veregy will reconfigure the boiler system to significantly reduce water and natural gas consumption and eliminate the major cost of 24-hour steam boiler monitoring. These upgrades are expected to enhance the comfort and reliability of campus facilities while reducing long-term operating costs.

Superintendent Dr. Todd Cutler emphasized the district's long-term commitment to clean energy and modern learning environments. Brett Gallagher of Veregy stated that the project reflects the district's vision and leadership and highlighted the dedication of team members.

Construction began in May, starting with lighting upgrades at South Tahoe Middle School. The project comes at a critical time for the region's energy landscape, as NV Energy will shift energy lines toward data centers starting in May 2027, which is expected to drive up energy prices across South Lake Tahoe. As a result, on-site solar becomes a more attractive option, helping to offset cost increases from the new energy supplier. Energy savings and sustainability will benefit students and the community for decades to come.

LTUSD serves approximately 3,500 students across its seven campuses. The project was made possible under the leadership of the LTUSD Board of Education, Superintendent Todd Cutler, Chief Business Officer Kelly Buttery, and Director of Facilities and Transportation David Zebo.

Veregy is an NAESCO-accredited decarbonization company focused on accelerating and simplifying the energy transition, providing turnkey engineering and construction services aimed at reducing customers' energy and operating costs through the implementation of energy-saving measures, infrastructure upgrades, smart building technology, electric vehicle fleet infrastructure, clean energy generation, and sustainability initiatives.
