en.Wedoany.com Reported - Colombia's Ministry of Mines and Energy recently announced that it will advance the power interconnection with Venezuela from the eastern department of Vichada, simultaneously unveiling a series of energy projects, including the 5 MW El Mere solar photovoltaic plant. This initiative is jointly promoted by the Ministry of Mines and Energy and the Institute for Planning and Promotion of Energy Solutions for Non-Interconnected Areas (IPSE).

The interconnection between the two countries aims to strengthen energy security in Vichada and position the department as a strategic hub for energy integration between Colombia and Venezuela. The information was disclosed by Minister of Mines and Energy Edwin Palma Egea during a working meeting held in Puerto Carreño, the departmental capital. The interconnection project was launched alongside the promotion of the 5 MW El Mere solar photovoltaic plant, which will provide clean and reliable electricity to over 1,600 users in Puerto Carreño.

These measures are part of an investment plan exceeding 89.9 billion Colombian pesos (approximately $26.3 million), with funds allocated to expand energy coverage, strengthen power infrastructure, and accelerate the deployment of renewable energy in Vichada. The Colombian government plans to improve the reliability of electricity services in the region—historically dependent on isolated power systems and fossil fuels—through bilateral interconnection, solar photovoltaic power generation, and rural solar solutions.

The Colombian government has registered four completed projects in Vichada, reportedly benefiting 1,767 users—over 6,185 people—through solar photovoltaic solutions. Two additional projects are under execution, involving 359 users. Furthermore, more than ten eco-schools equipped with solar systems are planned, along with six projects funded by the General Royalty System, amounting to over 40.797 billion Colombian pesos.

Minister Palma stated that Vichada has the potential to become a strategic location for energy integration between Colombia and Venezuela. The power interconnection between the two countries is advancing, aiming to enhance service reliability, drive regional economic development, and strengthen bilateral relations.
