Wedoany.com Report-Mar 13, Renewable energy developer BayWa r.e. has filed a Section 36 application with the Scottish government for the 500MW Redshaw battery energy storage system (BESS) in South Lanarkshire.

BESS projects assist in expanding the use of wind and solar energy.

The proposed BESS installation, situated 3km south of Douglas, re-inforces the Glasgow-based renewable energy company’s commitment to support Scotland’s shift to a net zero future.

The Redshaw BESS project will be developed in conjunction with Douglas and Angus Estates and will be the biggest of its type in the company’s UK portfolio.

Located beside the proposed 400kV Redshaw substation by Scottish Power Transmission, the BESS will play a key role in strengthening the UK’s renewable energy infrastructure.

The project will store surplus energy and release it when demand peaks, aiding in grid stability, boosting energy security and enhancing overall effectiveness.

If approved, it will offer long-term local benefits via an annual community fund, in line with BayWa r.e.’s commitment to giving local support.

The funding will boost local initiatives and developments over the project’s 40-year operational period.

BayWa r.e. UK development strategy and origination head Gemma Hamilton stated: “Submitting our Redshaw BESS Section 36 application is a big step forward for this important development.

“By locating large-scale storage systems in strategic locations, ensuring optionality around future technology, and developing strong local partnerships, we are creating an energy solution that will make a significant contribution to the drive towards net zero.

“This initiative highlights our commitment to investing purposefully in essential technologies that support a cleaner, more sustainable future.”

In November 2024, BayWa r.e. divested three solar projects in the US to a renewable independent power producer.
