en.Wedoany.com Reported - GoFibre, an Edinburgh-based UK alternative network operator building full-fibre (FTTP) broadband in rural areas of Scotland and Northern England, is making progress on its deployment in northeast Scotland under a publicly subsidised Project Gigabit contract, with the first locations now serving customers.

GoFibre's Project Gigabit contract for northeast Scotland was first awarded in July 2025 and entered the construction phase in February 2026, with a contract value of £105 million. The goal is to extend network coverage to hard-to-reach rural areas, covering approximately 63,000 premises in total, or around 100,000 when including commercial builds. The provider has also secured £289 million in private funding from Gresham House, Hamburg Commercial Bank, and SNIB, and has so far covered 130,000 premises across more than 30 locations in rural areas of Scotland and Northern England, participating in Project Gigabit contracts worth £145 million.

The first connections have gone live in Ezdell, Inverbervie, Longforgan, Montrose, Dunkeld, Bankfoot, Newtonhill, Portlethen, Alyth, and Coupar Angus. The deployment will create 30 direct construction jobs throughout the build period and support up to 180 jobs, including subcontract work.

GoFibre is also commercially adding additional premises to the build, bringing at least 100,000 premises in northeast Scotland onto its full-fibre network. As part of this, they are expanding their existing footprint in the Angus area by approximately 15,300 premises, covering Montrose, Forfar, and Kirriemuir, and in the Aberdeenshire area by approximately 9,600 premises, covering Laurencekirk, Stonehaven, and Newtonhill.

Andy Hepburn, Chief Operating Officer of GoFibre, said the company's mission is to improve digital connectivity in rural and hard-to-reach areas, and it is great to see more homes and businesses in Perth and Kinross and Aberdeenshire, Scotland, ready to connect to the network and enjoy fast, ultra-reliable connections on par with cities. He also stated that the company is not only committed to bridging the digital divide in rural Scotland but also bringing economic benefits to the communities it connects through job creation during the deployment.

New customers can choose a 150Mbps speed package at £22.50 per month, with 30Mbps upload, on a 24-month contract; the top-tier 1000Mbps package, with 100Mbps upload, is priced at £34.50. For users still under existing contracts with other ISPs who wish to switch, a £200 switching credit is available. Monthly prices increase by £3 every December.

The provider expects its new full-fibre broadband network to cover 250,000 premises in the UK by around mid-2028. As of June 2025, they had approximately 15,000 customers.
