en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Port Authority of Las Palmas (Autoridad Portuaria de Las Palmas) has installed its first border inspection container, a facility that will automate entry and exit checks for third-country nationals.

This container is the first of two procured by the Port Authority, both installed at the cruise terminal of Las Palmas Port. They are part of a contract for the supply, installation, and full maintenance of automated border control equipment and passenger information services, involving the European Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS).
The first container is equipped with eight self-service kiosks, which will supplement the manual processes currently carried out at border inspection points.
Beatriz Calzada, President of the Port Authority of Las Palmas, stated that these containers represent a key step in the digitalization of the port system, enabling Las Palmas Port to continue advancing the digital transformation of its infrastructure, aligning with the European strategy for smart border management, and consolidating its position as a strategic hub for Schengen area entry controls.
Calzada added that the implementation of EES and ETIAS will significantly improve the passenger experience while ensuring higher levels of security and control over international passenger traffic.
The project was awarded to Thales-TIS with a contract value of $1.18 million, funded by the European Internal Security Fund. Of this amount, $900,000 is allocated for equipment procurement and installation, and $280,000 for maintenance.
In addition to the containers, the contract includes the supply and installation of registration and verification tablets, video surveillance systems, telecommunications infrastructure connecting the National Police border inspection points to the cruise terminal via fiber optics, as well as the integration of signage and passenger information services at Las Palmas Port, Arrecife Port, and Puerto del Rosario Port.
The implementation of the EES system will enable electronic recording of entry and exit data for third-country travelers, helping to better manage migration flows, improve the efficiency and speed of passport checks, enhance security at the EU's external borders, and support the prevention and investigation of serious crimes, including terrorism.
To support operations, the Port Authority has awarded a supplementary contract for passenger assistance and information services to Activa Forum Canarias. This service, designed to facilitate the use of equipment and optimize queue management at inspection points, will begin operations in May. The contract also received €163,000 in European funding.
