en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Spanish government has approved a 300 million euro investment in artificial intelligence and quantum technology, and plans to participate in the European super factory network. Of this funding, 250 million euros are allocated to AI projects and 50 million euros to quantum technology projects, with the funds coordinated through the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC).

Spanish Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Function Óscar López speaking at a press conference after the Council of Ministers meeting

A week ago, the Spanish government, through the Spanish Technology Transformation Company (SETT), authorized an investment of 719 million euros in a public-private consortium that will represent Spain in the bidding process. The consortium includes Telefónica, ACS Group, Banco Santander, and Multiverse Computing. The project plans to establish a multi-site candidate proposal in La Morera de Montsant (Tarragona province) and San Fernando de Henares (Madrid province), aiming to attract approximately 5 billion euros in infrastructure investment.

This move places Spain in the race to build the super factory network promoted by the European Union, which aims to reduce Europe's dependence on US and Chinese technology in supercomputing and artificial intelligence. Such facilities are specifically designed to train and run the world's most advanced AI models. Unlike traditional data centers that focus on cloud services or storage, super factories integrate high-density computing power, high-speed networks, and energy systems capable of supporting large-scale generative AI workloads.

Spanish Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Function Óscar López stated that this initiative will give Spain access to supercomputing infrastructure and transform the country's scientific and industrial capabilities. He noted that Spain is in a leading position in digital transformation, and this decision will change the capabilities of businesses, researchers, and scientists, enabling them to access such supercomputing resources within the country.

The 250 million euros will be used for AI-related projects, and 50 million euros for quantum technology projects, both areas considered strategic priorities for European technological competitiveness. The funds are coordinated through the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC) based in Luxembourg. López pointed out that the initiative aims to allow European countries to share resources and reduce dependence on external actors.

Spain has certain advantages in this race, with two AI factories related to EuroHPC: one at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and another at the Galicia Supercomputing Center (CESGA), both receiving national funding. Additionally, Spain is equipped with the MareNostrum 5 quantum computer, a facility used for projects such as human genome simulation, accelerated design of new drugs, and the development of Earth digital twins.

The final outcome will depend on the next round of European tenders, but the government is optimistic. López emphasized after the Council of Ministers meeting that Spain's candidate proposal is ready, and he is confident that Spain will become one of the first European super factories. If approved, the super factory will boost the national technology ecosystem, strengthen R&D, attract specialized talent, support universities and technology centers, and accelerate the competitiveness of Spanish companies in the field of AI.
