en.Wedoany.com Reported - The UK government has announced a £60 million (approximately 539 million RMB) allocation to establish two artificial intelligence laboratories at the University of Oxford and University College London (UCL), aiming to develop open-source AI models with lower hardware requirements, thereby reducing reliance on products from major US tech companies.

According to the project plan, Oxford and UCL will jointly advance fundamental mathematical theory research in AI, improve model architectures, and develop AI systems with low computing power demands. This approach differs from the mainstream closed-source, high-computing-power technical routes currently adopted by countries such as the United States. UK Minister for AI Kanishka Narayan stated that the goal of the new laboratories is to lower the cost and deployment barriers of AI technology, enabling more businesses and public services to access AI, thereby maintaining the UK's competitiveness in this field.

The two universities will also invest an additional £2 million (approximately 17.958 million RMB) to fund doctoral students and plan to recruit at least 10 researchers to expand the AI talent pool.
