en.Wedoany.com Reported - STMicroelectronics has launched a secure mobile chip called the ST54M, designed to help smartphone and personal electronic device manufacturers meet future quantum security requirements while supporting a seamless user experience for various connected services.
The ST54M is a single-chip device that integrates a post-quantum cryptography (PQC) hardware accelerator, NFC, a secure element, and eSIM functionality. This solution targets a wide range of use cases, including contactless payments, transit ticketing, access control, digital identities, driver's licenses, connectivity services, and digital car keys, providing a path to enhanced protection for secure mobile connections and services.
As mobile devices become trusted platforms for financial transactions, identity credentials, carrier services, and secure access, product developers need to combine multiple functions on a single platform without compromising security, performance, or convenience. The ST54M enables OEMs and ecosystem partners to support multiple applications on a single platform and prepare for the transition to PQC.
The device is designed for personal electronics ecosystems involving mobile network operators, banks, governments, transit operators, automakers, digital wallet and service providers. It helps manufacturers meet stricter long-term security expectations while maintaining a consistent user experience. The ST54M is now available, enabling customers and partners to deliver post-quantum-ready implementations that meet industry standards expected to become mandatory around 2030.
"With the ST54M, we are expanding our mobile convergence platform to help customers address evolving security challenges while supporting the rich services users now expect from their devices," said David Richetto, Vice President and General Manager of the Connectivity and Security Division at STMicroelectronics. "By combining a PQC hardware accelerator with NFC, an embedded secure element, and embedded SIM functionality, the ST54M provides device manufacturers with a secure path to begin preparing for the next generation of mobile experiences."
The ST54M is a single-chip solution integrating an NFC controller with secure applications, eSIM, and NFC compliance products. Its key feature is a hardware accelerator for post-quantum cryptography algorithms, including ML-KEM and ML-DSA, supporting the transition from hybrid cryptographic approaches to full post-quantum deployment. This hardware engine is designed to meet emerging PQC requirements while protecting against side-channel and fault injection attacks. It is the latest result of STMicroelectronics' long-term commitment to security, following earlier offerings such as the certified software library NesLib-PQML and X-CUBE-PQC for STM32 microcontrollers.
The device integrates large-capacity memory to support multiple applications and includes an enhanced RF front end. These features help improve performance with smaller antennas and single-ended configurations, support more stable reader/writer operations, and enable demanding use cases such as mobile point-of-sale (mPOS) and wireless charging. The platform has completed Common Criteria 2022 EUCC and EMVCo certification testing, indicating its suitability for security-sensitive mobile applications.
