en.Wedoany.com Reported - Nigeria plans to collaborate with the Nigerian Association of Hydrogeologists (NAH) to enhance national groundwater mapping and improve hydrogeological data collection in support of sustainable development.
Professor Joseph Terlumun Utsev, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, disclosed this while receiving NAH President Ms. Fashe-Adam Francisca and her delegation at his office in Abuja on Thursday. This partnership will strengthen groundwater regulation, improve monitoring of water projects implemented by individuals, communities, and the government, and promote the sustainable development and management of groundwater nationwide.
Utsev acknowledged the association's contributions to groundwater exploration, protection, management, and advocacy, reaffirming the Ministry's commitment to collaborating with professional bodies to strengthen the water resources sector and improve services. He also assured the association of support for key initiatives, including the National Water Compact and environmental impact assessments for water-related projects. To formalize the partnership, the Minister has directed relevant directors to develop modalities for signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
Francisca stated that the visit aimed to introduce the association's newly elected leadership and thanked the Ministry for its efforts in promoting water resources development and food security. She noted that the association, comprising registered hydrogeologists, researchers, academics, and industry professionals from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, plays a key role in groundwater exploration, policy formulation, management, and public advocacy. She requested the Ministry's support for national groundwater mapping and hydrogeological data collection, the inclusion of NAH-certified hydrogeologists in Ministry projects and national tasks, and invited the Minister to the association's upcoming annual general meeting and international conference.
The Director in charge of the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Ali Ibrahim Dallah, along with other technical directors of the Ministry, attended the meeting. Both parties believe that this collaboration will advance water resources management, food security, and national development.
