en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Energy and Environment Institute of the University of São Paulo (IEE/USP), with support from the Brazilian Biogas and Biomethane Association (ABiogás) and the São Paulo State Department of Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics (SEMIL), will inaugurate an organic solid waste bioenergy and biofertilizer plant on June 30. Operating as an industrial-scale laboratory facility, the plant aims to integrate the sanitation, energy, and agricultural sectors, putting the circular economy concept into practice.
The plant currently has a daily processing capacity of 25 tons of organic waste and has been approved for expansion to 43.5 tons. The project converts food chain waste materials from the campus and large partners, such as industries and wholesale markets, into electricity, thermal energy, biomethane, and high-quality biofertilizer. Each ton of waste can generate 120 to 180 standard cubic meters of biogas, with a methane content of 50% to 65%, equivalent to generating 166 to 200 kWh of electricity or producing 90 to 117 cubic meters of biomethane.
The plant is equipped with a purification unit that separates biogas into biomethane and carbon dioxide, supplying fuel to a fleet of light and heavy natural gas vehicles at a campus filling station. The electricity generated is already being supplied to the university's own grid and the National Interconnected System (SIN). Approximately 80% of the process residue volume is converted into digestate, a liquid fertilizer currently being tested in sugarcane cultivation and hydroponic vegetable gardens in partnership with the São Paulo State Agricultural Technology Agency (APTA). The plant serves as a modular solution that can be replicated in large cities and industrial sectors.

The inauguration ceremony will be held on June 30, 2026, at 14:00 at the Energy and Environment Institute of the University of São Paulo (IEE/USP), located on the University of São Paulo campus.
