Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 12, Peab, a Nordic construction and civil engineering firm, has secured a contract worth Nkr116m ($11m) to expand the smolt facility at Sævareid in Bjørnafjorden, Norway. The agreement comes from Artec Aqua, a key provider of onshore aquaculture solutions, and the facility belongs to Sævareid Fiskeanlegg, a smolt producer. Located south of Bergen, the upgraded site aims to boost annual production to 29 million smolts, enhancing capacity for fry salmon.
Construction plans comprise a new building with a gross floor area of 4,800m².
The expansion involves constructing a new building with a gross floor area of 4,800m², situated alongside the existing operation. Part of the project includes demolishing older sections of the current structures to make way for the modern facility. Registered in the first quarter of 2025, the construction is slated for completion by the end of 2027.
Kjetil Nordang, managing director of Peab K. Nordang, expressed optimism about the project: “We look forward to start working and continue our good collaboration with Artec Aqua. Peab has extensive expertise in both buildings for foodstuffs and complex concrete work.” This highlights the company’s experience and readiness to tackle the specialized demands of the aquaculture sector.
Based in Förslöv, southern Sweden, Peab employs approximately 13,000 people across the Nordic region. The Sævareid project adds to its portfolio of recent contracts. For instance, the company has also been tasked with building a combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Örtofta, Sweden, for Kraftringen Energi, a municipally owned energy firm. That contract is valued at Skr388m, reflecting Peab’s growing presence in energy infrastructure.
Additionally, Peab is involved in developing Trysil Suites, a new holiday home complex in Trysil, Norway. This diverse range of projects underscores the company’s versatility in construction and engineering across different sectors and locations.
The Sævareid expansion focuses on increasing production capacity without impacting imports or local consumption, as the smolt output serves aquaculture needs, primarily for export markets. The collaboration with Artec Aqua ensures the facility meets industry standards, leveraging Peab’s technical skills in concrete work and food-related construction. By late 2027, the completed site in Bjørnafjorden will support Sævareid Fiskeanlegg’s growth, contributing to Norway’s aquaculture industry with a modern, efficient setup.
