Explore the history of Shopping Recife (the first shopping center in Pernambuco) and its impact on the local economy.

According to JCPM, Shopping Recife was the first complex in the region to adopt a planned enclosed commercial model, featuring stores, parking, leisure, dining, and service facilities. The project helped expand Recife's commercial dynamics after its opening, forming a new socioeconomic axis in the southern zone of the state capital. Currently, Shopping Recife houses approximately 450 stores, 90 dining facilities, 14 movie theaters, and about 5,800 parking spaces.

One of the distinguishing features of this shopping center compared to other commercial landmarks is its integration of Pernambuco's culture. Upon its opening, works such as "Leda e o Cisne" by Francisco Brennand and sculptures by José Cláudio, Corbiniano Lins, and Abelardo da Hora defined the cultural tone of the space. During its 45th anniversary celebrations in 2025, the shopping center hosted cultural parades featuring frevo and maracatu.

The shopping center has launched a modernization and expansion project called "Masterplan." According to information from the Brazilian Shopping Centers Association (Abrasce), the initial investment for the first two delivery phases of the project—Parque Gourmet and Recife MedCenter—is BRL 250 million, expected to create over 1,700 direct jobs. Parque Gourmet will feature three floors with 1,800 seats distributed across an indoor hall, rooftop, outdoor areas, and terraces. Meanwhile, Recife MedCenter expands operations into the health sector, planning two towers capable of accommodating 168 consultation rooms, with an expected opening in 2027.

It has become part of Recife's urban core, influencing consumption, circulation, and the way urban space is occupied in the region.
