en.Wedoany.com Reported - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum revealed that Mexico has jointly expressed support with Canada for extending the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) by another 16 years. Sheinbaum stated that she has signed an official letter conveying Mexico's position, and Canada has expressed the same intent through its Ministry of Economy.
The decision now rests with the United States. If the three countries fail to reach an agreement on the extension, a structural review process will be initiated to determine necessary adjustments to the existing agreement, rather than a routine annual review. Sheinbaum added that any substantive changes resulting from this process would require approval from the legislatures of all three countries, though she considers this outcome unlikely.
Sheinbaum praised the U.S. Supreme Court for blocking President Trump's efforts to end birthright citizenship, calling the measure unconstitutional. She noted that affected children come from Mexican families and other nationalities, where parents, regardless of their own immigration status, give birth on U.S. soil. She argued that Mexican workers in the United States fill genuine labor gaps without displacing anyone, and that the number of migrants heading north has been steadily declining in recent years.
As the Mexican national team faces Ecuador, Sheinbaum called on fans gathered at the Paseo de la Reforma to enjoy themselves but to be mindful of their surroundings and clean up after celebrations to avoid leaving large amounts of trash. She noted that a previous gathering of approximately 800,000 people occurred without major incidents and expressed confidence that fans would act responsibly again.
Mexico will airlift approximately 878 water purification units and 7 generators to Venezuela that day, continuing the emergency response to the earthquake in Caracas and surrounding areas. A naval vessel is also ready to transport food and other donated supplies collected from multiple agencies. Sheinbaum pointed out that defense officials coordinating relief efforts are meeting directly with military and civilian officials in Venezuela to confirm needs, with some aid delivered by air via the embassy and the rest by sea.
Sheinbaum announced plans to initiate a public discussion on regulating artificial intelligence and restricting social media platform use for children and adolescents. She intends to invite external experts to upcoming briefings to inform the discussion. She also raised the possibility of limiting mobile phone use in schools nationwide and welcomed congressional and media participation in the debate. Beyond the issue of platform addiction among youth, Sheinbaum noted broader research topics including the global development status of AI technology, existing governance frameworks, regulatory responsibilities, and preventive measures Mexico should adopt.
