en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Lufthansa Group has announced it will operate a record number of flights between Europe and South Africa during the 2026-27 Northern Hemisphere winter (starting from the end of October). At that time, the total number of flights to and from South Africa operated by Lufthansa and SWISS will reach 38 per week.
René Koinzack, Senior Director for North, East, and Southern Africa at the Lufthansa Group, stated that South Africa is one of the group's most important long-haul markets in Africa, and the 2026-27 winter flight schedule reflects this confidence. By increasing flights, optimizing overnight flight times from Johannesburg, and introducing the latest cabin products on key routes, the group offers South African travelers more choices, greater comfort, and enhanced access to Europe and beyond.
Lufthansa will add two flights between Munich and Johannesburg, bringing the frequency on this route to five times per week. These flights will operate on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, using Airbus A350-900 aircraft. The Munich-Johannesburg route was only resumed two years ago. In response to customer demand, both directions are overnight flights, with return flight LH 579 departing from Johannesburg's O.R. Tambo International Airport at 19:55 and arriving in Munich at 05:00 the following day.
The airline will also increase flights on the Frankfurt-Cape Town route, making it a daily service. This route will be operated using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. Lufthansa's Munich-Cape Town route (daily) will continue to operate as usual, using A350-900 aircraft.
All aircraft serving the Cape Town route—including the 787 and A350—will be equipped with Lufthansa's brand-new Allegris cabin, covering three classes: Business Class, Premium Economy Class, and Economy Class. The Allegris cabin features the latest technology and premium materials.
SWISS, which operates daily flights between Zurich and Johannesburg, will upgrade this route by introducing brand-new Airbus A350 aircraft, featuring its completely redesigned "SWISS senses" long-haul cabin. This cabin offers enhanced comfort across all four classes in this configuration.
Edelweiss, the Swiss leisure airline under the Lufthansa Group, will continue to operate the Zurich-Cape Town route, with up to five flights per week. These direct flights are also operated using A350 aircraft.
