en.Wedoany.com Reported - Spanish airline Iberia announced on August 19 that it has extended the suspension of its flights to Cuba until June 2027, citing fuel shortages on the island and the U.S. oil embargo.

In April, Iberia had announced the suspension of its flights to Cuba, citing "the current situation in Cuba," with the halt initially expected to last at least until November. The airline noted at the time that there were "countless supply problems" and "low demand" on the ground.

In an online statement, Iberia said that "the temporary suspension of the route to and from Havana (the capital of Cuba) has been extended until June 30, 2027."

Other airlines have taken similar measures, including Spain's World2Fly, Air Canada, and Air France. Due to the fuel supply situation in Cuba, aircraft must make technical stops to refuel on return flights.

Before Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was ousted by the United States in January, Cuba had relied on oil supplies from Venezuela. Since then, Cuba has been subject to an oil embargo by the Donald Trump administration.

The island nation, with a population of 9.6 million, is experiencing a deep economic and energy crisis, marked by severe inflation, prolonged blackouts, and shortages of food and medicine. Cuban authorities attribute this to the combined effects of the tightened U.S. embargo, low economic productivity, and the collapse of the tourism industry.
