Saudi Arabia's 12 GWh Battery Energy Storage Project: 27 Developers Prequalified

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC), acting as the main buyer under the supervision of the Ministry of Energy, has prequalified 27 leading developers for the tender of its second batch of battery energy storage system (BESS) projects with a total capacity of 12 GWh. The shortlisted entities include international utility giants and regional key players such as EDF, Kepco, Marubeni, Masdar, and Acwa Power.

This batch comprises six Independent Storage Provider (ISP) projects with a total installed capacity of 3,000 MW and a storage duration of 4 hours. Each project will be developed under the Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model, where the winning consortium will fully own the special purpose vehicle (SPV) established for the project and sign a long-term storage service agreement with SPPC.

Each of the six battery energy storage projects is sized at 500 MW/2,000 MWh, distributed across different regions of Saudi Arabia: Samha BESS ISP in Al-Qassim Province, Sadawi BESS ISP in the Eastern Province, Al-Leeth BESS ISP, Khulis BESS ISP, and Ashyrah BESS ISP in Makkah Province, and Al-Henakiyah BESS ISP in Madinah Province.

According to SPPC, the prequalified applicants cover internationally leading developers, utility companies, renewable energy enterprises, battery technology suppliers, and regional investors.
