The project aims to reduce coastal storm hazard risks, protect coastal infrastructure, and enhance the long-term resilience of the shoreline.

Prior to the project's approval, the Trump administration took action to allow the use of existing federal funds for initial construction. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) approved the use of existing funds from the Disaster Relief Act of 2019 for initial construction authorization, with future nourishment cycles to be authorized through the upcoming Water Resources Development Act (WRDA). Congressman Rouzer stated that after years of effort, Surf City has now secured federal approval and funding to enhance coastal resilience, better protecting community homes, businesses, and infrastructure from storms for decades to come.

The project focuses on beach and dune nourishment along approximately 6 miles of Surf City's coastline, including the construction of a new dune and a beach berm about 50 feet wide to provide stronger protection for the community.
