en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Ilo Desalination Project (Proyecto Desaladora Ilo), promoted by the Private Investment Promotion Agency of Peru (ProInversión) under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, will ensure sustainable access to high-quality drinking water for 134,000 residents in the districts of El Algarrobal, Pacocha, and Ilo in the Moquegua region. This infrastructure will strengthen the local water system, guaranteeing optimal supply and service continuity during emergencies such as technical failures, climate anomalies, or shortages of traditional water sources.

The project includes a comprehensive solution: optimizing the collection of surface water from the Pasto Grande system at a flow rate of 211 liters per second; and constructing a new desalination plant with a capacity of 452 liters per second, introducing seawater as a new water source. This water source diversification strategy provides the system with flexibility and independence, making it immune to natural events or social conflicts that could hinder the continuous supply of high-quality drinking water to households.
The project also includes technological upgrades to the Pampa Inalámbrica water treatment plant, employing ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis systems to remove boron and other inorganic elements, ensuring the highest water quality standards.
The Ilo Desalination Plant is part of the APP 5.0 vision, a people-centered approach that ensures private sector participation under strict efficiency and sustainability criteria. It is expected to provide 100% co-financing for investment, along with temporary support for operation and maintenance costs, thereby ensuring the long-term sustainability of the service. Through this project, the Peruvian government reaffirms the role of Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) as a key driver for reducing social gaps and providing essential services.
