en.Wedoany.com Reported - The 335-meter-long container ship "MSC Leila," equipped with the latest technology, recently made its first call at Terminal Pacífico Sur Valparaíso (TPS) in Valparaíso, Chile, marking its inaugural visit to the port since its launch in 2025. The vessel operates on the "MSC Europa" service.

With a capacity of nearly 11,500 standard containers, the "MSC Leila" is scheduled to make five calls in Valparaíso, completing approximately 3,000 handling operations. This call adopts a single-call model, merging southbound and northbound voyages into one operation to handle both import and export cargo simultaneously.
Agustina Rojas, head of TPS terminal, stated that new-generation container ships like the "MSC Leila," as well as the previously docked "MSC Emilia" and "MSC Edna" with similar capacities, consistently pose challenges to the team in terms of efficiency, safety, and coordination.
Rojas added that this challenge is even more pronounced when a single call involves both import and export cargo, requiring coordinated efforts across TPS departments and all participants in the logistics chain. She expressed delight that Valparaíso can accommodate increasingly larger vessels and reaffirmed the commitment to enhancing the city's port competitiveness.
The "MSC Leila" features a curved metal windbreaker at its bow, designed to reduce wind resistance and improve navigation efficiency, thereby lowering energy consumption. The vessel is also equipped with a dual-fuel propulsion system, capable of using liquefied natural gas (LNG) or conventional fuel.
Built by China's New Times Shipbuilding, the "MSC Leila" entered service in May 2025 and is currently deployed on the South America-to-Europe route, promoting larger capacity, higher efficiency, and more advanced technology in international maritime trade.
