en.Wedoany.com Reported - Thailand's state-owned PTT is in preliminary talks with developers of US liquefied natural gas (LNG) export projects to invest in related facilities and secure long-term supply, according to sources familiar with the matter who spoke to Bloomberg on Tuesday. The move aims to ensure stable long-term supply and avoid purchasing spot LNG at high prices during crises such as turmoil in the Middle East.
According to Bloomberg sources, PTT is in discussions with multiple developers, including Woodside Energy, which is building the Louisiana LNG export facility in the US. Woodside is seeking solid long-term offtake commitments for its newly approved Louisiana LNG plant. Liz Westcott, CEO of Woodside Energy, told Bloomberg TV last month that buyer interest in Louisiana LNG output has recently increased following unexpected supply disruptions from the Middle East.
PTT told Bloomberg in a statement that it aims to expand its LNG supply portfolio, with the US being just one of the countries under consideration. Sudden disruptions in Middle East LNG exports have prompted Asian buyers, including Thailand—the largest LNG importer in Southeast Asia—to seek long-term solutions for supply from sources that do not require passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Reuters reported last month, citing sources, that negotiations on long-term US LNG supply to Thailand have accelerated since the Iran war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz disrupted shipments from Qatar.
Thailand has committed to purchasing US energy products, including LNG. In October 2025, the US and Thailand reached a reciprocal trade framework under which Thailand pledged to buy approximately $5.4 billion worth of US energy products annually, including LNG, crude oil, and ethane.
Thailand has also expressed preliminary interest in participating in the future Alaska LNG project. The project, which is receiving strong support and promotion from the Trump administration, has yet to reach a final investment decision for the $44 billion Alaska LNG project. However, Thailand's PTT signed a cooperation agreement last year to strategically participate in the project, including purchasing 2 million tons of LNG annually from Alaska LNG over a 20-year period.
