en.Wedoany.com Reported - VietJetAir is planning to establish a subsidiary in Australia, challenging the aviation market dominated by Qantas, Jetstar, and Virgin Australia. The airline has submitted an application for an operating license and is reportedly set to commence operations with ten Boeing 737 aircraft initially.
Western Sydney International Airport, scheduled to open in October 2026, will provide additional slot resources for Sydney. An airline codenamed "YYY" has applied for 2,252 slots per year.
Led by Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, VietJetAir already operates subsidiaries in Thailand and Kazakhstan and has placed triple-digit aircraft orders with Airbus and Boeing.
The current Australian market is monopolized by Qantas, Jetstar, and Virgin Australia. Previously, Singapore Airlines merged Tiger Airways into Virgin, while new entrants such as Regional Express and Bonza have ceased operations due to losses.
VietJetAir's latest financial report shows revenue of $4.5 billion and after-tax profit of over $80 million, a 51% year-on-year increase. The airline currently operates daily flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Melbourne and Sydney, as well as five weekly flights to Perth and Brisbane.
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) has not yet confirmed receipt of the license application.
