en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Eko Atlantic land reclamation project in Lagos, Nigeria, continues to progress. As of June 2023, this project to build a planned city on the Atlantic Ocean has received over 75 million cubic meters of dredged sand. The project aims to use approximately 95 million cubic meters of sand to reclaim about 10 million square meters of new land from the sea, designed to accommodate 250,000 permanent residents and approximately 150,000 daily commuters.

The project is adjacent to Victoria Island, the commercial core of Lagos, and is developed by South Energyx Nigeria Limited in partnership with the Lagos State Government, with support from the Federal Government of Nigeria. According to project consultant Haskoning, due to the historical erosion of the Lagos coastline, which has receded nearly 3 kilometers, the engineering team referenced the original 1905 coastline and chose to construct offshore defense structures further out at sea. As of June 2023, over 6.5 million square meters of reclaimed land had been formed, with approximately 7 kilometers of the "Great Wall of Lagos" sea wall completed. The final planned length is 8.4 to 8.5 kilometers, designed to dissipate wave energy and protect the reclaimed city.

The project website shows that Phases 1 and 2 have been completed, with infrastructure such as bridges, water supply, and sewage systems already operational. In September 2025, the Nigerian Rugby School welcomed its first Year 7 and Sixth Form students at its campus in the area. The new city is equipped with an independent energy and underground pipeline network, including a 10 MVA natural gas power plant, three substations, and a 48-kilometer underground cable network. The city adopts a mixed-use design, encompassing residential, commercial, service, marina, and educational facilities.

The project remains under continuous development. Haskoning classifies it as "2004 – Ongoing," and the project website mentions expansion into Phase 3 and subsequent phases. Eko Atlantic aims to create a new urban frontier for the coastal megacity of Lagos while strengthening coastal defenses in areas threatened by erosion.
