Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 26, In the Algarve region of southern Portugal, near Alcoutim, a 5MW/20MWh battery energy storage system began operations at Galp’s largest solar power plant. Commissioned by Portuguese energy company Galp and U.S.-based Powin, this system, the first of its kind for Powin in Europe, was connected to the grid in 2025. It enables the plant to store and dispatch renewable energy efficiently, supporting grid stability and meeting peak demand.

The Alcoutim solar plants, with a combined capacity of 144MW, generate enough electricity to supply 80,000 households annually while reducing CO2 emissions by 75,000 tons each year. The new battery system enhances the facility’s ability to provide reliable energy and supports the growing demand for grid services, contributing to a more sustainable energy network.

Georgios Papadimitriou, Galp’s Executive Vice-President of Renewables, New Business and Innovation, stated: “We are leaping ahead in the learning curve, managing complex energy systems and offering a new range of services and opportunities to customers, while contributing to a stable and sustainable energy system.” Brian Kane, Powin’s Chief Projects Officer, added: “This project represents a critical step in Powin’s journey as we expand internationally to meet the growing demand for energy storage solutions in Europe.”

The project features Powin’s Centipede Stack750 and a power conversion system from Hitachi Energy, highlighting the value of global collaboration in advancing Europe’s energy transition. Alberto Prieto, Head of Power Conversion Solutions for Hitachi Energy, noted: “Our converters remain the prime choice for IPPs and integrators seeking grid stability and flexibility, along with digital enablement for operations and business processes for a more sustainable and secure grid.”

This initiative strengthens Portugal’s renewable energy infrastructure and sets a model for integrating storage solutions into solar power systems. For those interested in exploring advancements in the electronics and energy sectors, the Evertiq Expo on May 15, 2025, in Malmö, Sweden, offers a platform to connect with industry leaders and learn about emerging trends.
