en.Wedoany.com Reported - Moran Towing Corporation, headquartered in New Canaan, Connecticut, recently held a naming ceremony for its newly built ASD harbor tug, the "J. Themistoclis Moran."

This new tug is one of the company's existing series of tugs, specifically designed to meet the demands of modern port operations and evolving customer requirements, and is also one of the largest vessels in the Moran Towing fleet. The first tug in this series, the "William E. Moran," was delivered in 2025.

The "J. Themistoclis Moran" was built by Master Boat Builders in Coden, Alabama, and designed by Canadian naval architecture firm Robert Allan Ltd., specifically for high-performance escort and ship assist operations. The vessel features a compact, flush-deck design primarily intended for ship handling in modern but typically smaller harbors and ports.

This all-steel tug measures 92 feet (28 meters) in length, 40 feet (12 meters) in width, and 16.6 feet (5.06 meters) in depth, with a gross tonnage of 118 tons and a bollard pull exceeding 80 tons. Moran Towing stated that the vessel is well-equipped to precisely control and manage the increasingly large and complex ships calling at U.S. ports.

The tug holds an American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) escort notation, and its propulsion system utilizes EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) Tier IV-compliant Caterpillar 3516E engines, delivering a total power of 6,770 horsepower (5,050 kilowatts), connected to twin Z-drive thrusters for enhanced maneuverability. The vessel has also received low-emission vessel certification, enabling significant reductions in nitrogen oxide emissions.
