Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 23, The New York state government has launched a series of road resurfacing projects on Long Island to improve safety and mobility for motorists and pedestrians. Covering 55 lane miles across five key routes, these initiatives represent a $16.6 million investment in the region’s road infrastructure.
Major construction efforts have begun, involving the milling of deteriorated asphalt and its replacement with a new surface.
Construction began recently and will continue through the summer, focusing on removing worn asphalt and laying new surfaces. The projects target major roadways, including sections of the Meadowbrook State Parkway, Sunrise Highway, and other routes in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
Governor Kathy Hochul stated: “With the onset of warmer weather, we are delivering on our promise to modernise Long Island’s infrastructure and invest in safer, smoother travel for all New Yorkers. These roadway improvements will help reduce congestion, enhance safety and strengthen the connections that keep our communities and economy moving forward.”
Beyond resurfacing, the projects include upgrades to enhance accessibility and safety. New crosswalks, pavement markings, and curb ramps will be installed, with over 120 curb ramps upgraded to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. Reflective lane markings will also be added to improve visibility and road safety.
To minimize disruptions, most work will occur during off-peak hours, aligning with New York State’s Drivers First Initiative. The projects are scheduled for completion by the end of 2025.
These efforts build on prior improvements to Long Island’s road network, including completed projects on the Long Island Expressway, Meadowbrook State Parkway, Northern State Parkway, State Route 109, and Southern State Parkway. Earlier in April 2025, the state also began an $86.7 million pavement improvement project on a nearly five-mile section of the New England Thruway (I-95) in Westchester County.
The ongoing upgrades aim to support daily commuters, local businesses, and the broader economy by ensuring safer and more efficient travel across Long Island’s vital roadways.
