en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Los Angeles-based organization Materials & Applications (M&A) has partnered with Departamento del Distrito to unveil the installation "Earthen Comforts: Airing Earth" in the courtyard of Craft Contemporary, continuing its exploration of shading and climate adaptability through the solar-powered installation Light Gauge. Designed by Liz Gálvez of Office e.g, the project utilizes a columnar hall structure covered with woven panels to create a sustainable outdoor public space capable of withstanding the high summer temperatures of Southern California.

M&A Director Kate Yeh Chiu stated that the project stems from interdisciplinary collaboration among architects, artists, building scientists, local material researchers, and students. "Earthen Comforts reshapes this paradigm by repositioning thermal design as an architectural and civic act, intervening in urgent debates around climate adaptation, material practices, and collective living," said Gálvez. The installation primarily uses 2x4 and 2x6 lumber for its structure, with adobe blocks serving as buttresses to support the wooden components, while native site steel beams traverse the structure and railings anchored to adjacent buildings provide additional support.

The canopy above the installation tilts 45 degrees to the west, blocking sunlight during the hottest part of the day and at sunset. The roof panels are covered with woven fibers, and the perforated gaps between the weaves allow for air circulation while providing sun protection. The synergy of airflow, materials, and shading enables visitors to experience a microclimate within the structure. The public space integrates cold-water pipe seating, allowing visitors to directly contact the cooling surface, reinforcing non-mechanical cooling measures.

The installation will be on display until October 25.
