en.Wedoany.com Reported - Panama's Copa Airlines is set to become the first airline in Latin America to offer Starlink WiFi onboard, but also the first to charge most passengers for using the service. The Panama-based Star Alliance member announced it will roll out Starlink across its entire fleet, with the first aircraft equipped with the system entering commercial service on July 4, and full installation expected by the first quarter of 2027.

This model differs from previous Starlink partnerships with airlines. Every airline that previously introduced Starlink either offered the service completely free of charge or provided it free through a complimentary loyalty program. Copa Airlines' new pricing strategy raises a question for the aviation industry: whether other airlines will ultimately decide to charge for one of passengers' favorite new onboard amenities, as was the case before Starlink emerged.

Copa Airlines stated that aircraft equipped with Starlink will provide passengers with high-speed, low-latency internet, supporting video streaming, cloud-based work applications, online gaming, instant messaging, and live sports events throughout the flight. Free WiFi is only available to ConnectMiles PreferMember Gold, Platinum, and President members, business class passengers, and customers who have subscribed to Starlink Residential or Starlink Roaming services. Other passengers must purchase internet access through the onboard Starlink portal.

According to One Mile At A Time, Starlink had previously built a reputation by offering free onboard connectivity to passengers, with airlines using free internet as a competitive advantage. Copa Airlines' decision represents a significant departure from what is rapidly becoming an industry norm. The airline is leveraging Starlink both as a loyalty benefit and a potential ancillary revenue source, which is increasingly important for many carriers. This announcement also solidifies Copa Airlines' position in Latin America, as it becomes the first airline in the region to introduce Starlink connectivity.

According to Euronews, multiple airlines, including Hawaiian Airlines, Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways, airBaltic, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and the Lufthansa Group, have either introduced or committed to introducing Starlink without directly charging passengers. In many cases, passengers only need to join the airline's free loyalty program to connect. The widespread availability of free Starlink has accelerated its adoption, as the technology offers faster speeds and lower latency than traditional geostationary satellite systems. Passengers can typically browse the web, stream video, participate in video calls, and use cloud-based applications throughout the flight, including over oceans and remote areas.

Whether Copa Airlines' model will become a broader industry trend remains uncertain. Many full-service airlines view free high-speed WiFi as a basic customer benefit rather than an added value. If Copa Airlines proves that travelers are willing to pay for Starlink while premium customers are satisfied with free access, other airlines may eventually consider introducing similar tiered pricing structures. But for now, Copa Airlines remains the first carrier to set up a Starlink paywall for most passengers.
