Wedoany.com Report-May 2, ZESCO, Zambia’s state-owned electricity utility, has unveiled plans to integrate approximately 500 megawatts of solar power into the national grid to address the country’s electricity shortfall. This initiative responds to reduced hydroelectricity generation caused by drought conditions, aiming to enhance energy reliability.

Within the next three months, 134 megawatts are expected to be operational. ZESCO Managing Director Justin Longo outlined key projects contributing to this increase, including 100 MW from Chisamba, 25 MW from Mansa, 7.5 MW from Kasupe, and 2 MW from Shangombo. Additionally, the Micro Generator Scheme will provide 270 megawatts, and the Presidential Solar Initiative will contribute 62 megawatts.

In a speech delivered on his behalf by ZESCO Divisional Manager Given Monde at the Third National Students and Youth Parliament in Lusaka, Longo emphasized the role of advanced technologies in improving energy access. He stated: “ZESCO believes that Zambia’s energy future will be heavily influenced and propelled by creative, innovative, knowledgeable, and skilled youth.” He highlighted the importance of net metering, smart grids, and mini-grid systems in optimizing energy management and expanding electricity coverage nationwide.

Longo also underscored ZESCO’s commitment to engaging young people in shaping the energy sector, noting the utility’s support for initiatives like the 2025 National Students and Youth Parliament. These platforms encourage youth participation in addressing national challenges, including energy sustainability.

Michelo Chizombe, Chairperson of the National Council of Students Union (NACOSU), commended the Youth Parliament for fostering dialogue among young leaders from Zambia’s ten provinces. He said: “The event enabled discussions on key national issues, including energy and governance.” Chizombe encouraged young people to invest in personal development and skills training to prepare for leadership roles and contribute to national progress.

ZESCO’s solar power expansion reflects a strategic effort to diversify Zambia’s energy mix and mitigate the impact of drought on hydroelectricity. By leveraging solar projects and innovative technologies, the utility aims to stabilize the national grid and ensure broader access to electricity.
